1: Music Exploration Journey

Last 12th-19th August 2026, I had the chance to join IMMEA Orff Level 1 Course in Shenzhen, China. It was my first experience to join a music training which was purely on Orff Schulwerk. My previous experience was joining early childhood music education that had Kodaly, Orff and Dalcroze approaches used together.

My understanding towards Orff before joining the level course was just on basic stuff, I know there are Orff instruments which are very interesting to incorporate in our music lesson, some terms used in Orff - ostinato, bordun.

Before the course started, we were asked to read a book, Looking at the Roots: A Guide to Understanding Orff Schulwerk by Wolfgang Hartmann. From the book, I learned that the root of Orff was about "play" which was a child's nature. From play, it evolved to music, movement, dance, speech and instruments playing. Yet, I have not finished reading the book.

Before moving to level 2, there's a prerequisite for us to participate in 20 hours of related Orff workshops or training to deepen our experience and knowledge. I'm looking forward to learning and experiencing more in Orff. At the same time, join available webinars and find related teaching resources and reading notes for self-improvement. The second book I'm reading is Teach Like It's Music: An Artful Approach to Education by Doug Goodkin. IMMEA organised a book club session on - what are the important points that we need to take note while teaching a music lesson. From there, only I get to know the author Doug Goodkin and search up on him. I learned that teaching Orff is an experience that you need to constantly reflect on your teaching journey to be better. I also stumbled upon his blog while searching about him hence gave me an inspiration to also keep a writing reflection throughout my music teaching journey.

I'm still learning, processing all related information and experiencing different topics. I'm fascinated on how so many different topics that can be related to Orff and develop in a bigger topic and picture where not only in the world of music but also different topics such as the nature intertwined together.

As I was clearing my phone photo album, I saw my reflection for my level 1 course. I would like to post it here too later, for my own collection and memory to look back on later days.
